AB: The plant and animal communities of four formerly drained wetland basins in central Iowa were inventoried several years after the basins had reflooded. A total of 45 wetland plant species, 18 wetland invertebrate taxa, 11 bird species, and other typical vertebrates were present. This study demonstrates that a high-quality wetland, with a plant and animal community very similar to unaltered Iowa wetlands, can be restored by removing or blocking tile lines. This is an easy and cost-effective way to restore wetland complexes where there are none or to add wetlands to an existing wetland complex.

AB: Standardization of body site for scale sampling would improve comparability of growth data among studies. Although some standardization has been achieved, reasons for choosing sites have rarely been documented. In our study, four scales were collected from each of several sites on yellow perch Perca flavescens from West Okoboji Lake and Clear Lake, Iowa [USA]. On the basis of the least variability in scale size and lowest frequency of regenerated scales, the site below the lateral line at the tip of the pectoral fin when the fin was pressed to the body was selected. Sex of fish and season of collection did not significantly affect the body-scale regression, intercept values for which ranged from 15 mm for scales from the caudal peduncle to 50 mm for scales from the most anterior site.

AB: The results of seven aquatic vegetation surveys on Clear Lake, Iowa, between 1896 and 1981 were compared. Of 52 aquatic macrophyte species previously identified from the lake, 19 were found in 1981. Five species were reported for the first time. The species composition has shifted from one dominated by submergent plants to one dominated by emergent plants. The changes over the past 85 years may be at least partially related to increased phytoplankton turbidity in recent years.

AB: A 15-yr series of daily measurements of pH and total alkalinity recorded at the water intake of a municipal water-treatment plant on Clear Lake, Iowa, demonstrated that rapid chemical changes occur annually as the ice cover melts. Additional measurements of total and Ca hardness on this and 3 other eutrophic, hard-water lakes showed that total and Ca hardness concentrations declined rapidly as the main ice mass was destroyed. This decline was not caused by chemical or biological precipitation of carbonates, but by a dilution effect of melting ice. The magnitude of the declines could be predicted from measurements of hardness under the ice, lake volume, and volume of ice.
